# World Instruments Guide – Sacred Instruments from Around the World

Music and sound are among the oldest spiritual technologies known to humanity. Long before written language, before organised religion, before cities and civilisations, human beings were using instruments to enter altered states, call in spirits, mark the seasons, heal the sick, and celebrate the sacred.

At Sacred Essence, our world instruments department brings together sacred instruments from traditions across the globe — from Andean shamanic drums to Tibetan singing bowls, Celtic frame drums to Native American flutes. This guide introduces each instrument family, its origins, and how it can be used in your own practice.

## Shamanic Drums

The drum is the most universal sacred instrument in the world. Found in virtually every culture and tradition, the shamanic frame drum is the primary vehicle for journeying — its steady, monotonous beat (4–7 beats per second) inducing a theta brainwave state that allows the practitioner to enter non-ordinary reality.

Frame drums are used across Siberian, Celtic, Native American, Andean, and many other traditions. They come in natural skin (deer, elk, buffalo) and synthetic (vegan, all-weather) versions.

## Singing Bowls, Tingshas & Gongs

Tibetan and Himalayan singing bowls are among the most widely used sound healing instruments in the world. Traditionally made from an alloy of seven metals (each associated with a celestial body), singing bowls produce rich, complex, multi-tonal sounds that create powerful vibrations felt throughout the body.

Singing bowls are used for meditation, space clearing, chakra balancing, sound healing sessions, and ceremony. Tingshas — small Tibetan cymbals connected by a cord — produce a clear, penetrating tone used to mark transitions, open and close meditation, and cut through heavy energy.

## Rattles & Maracas

The rattle is the second most important shamanic instrument after the drum. Used across virtually every indigenous tradition in the world, rattles are used to call in spirits, cleanse energy, mark rhythm in ceremony, and accompany the drum during journeying.

Different rattles carry different energies and serve different purposes. Gourd rattles are earthy and grounding; seed rattles are lighter and calling in nature; rawhide rattles are powerful and penetrating. Maracas are the Latin American form of the gourd rattle, used in music and ceremony alike. Rainsticks — long tubes filled with seeds or pebbles — produce the sound of rain and are used to call in water energy and cleansing.

## Flutes & Panpipes

The flute is one of the oldest instruments in the world — bone flutes dating back 40,000 years have been found in archaeological sites across Europe and Asia. In shamanic and ceremonial traditions, the flute is used to call in spirits, open ceremony, and create a bridge between the human and spirit worlds.

Native American flutes are particularly prized for their haunting, meditative tone. Panpipes — multiple tubes of varying length bound together — are central to Andean music and ceremony, their sound evoking the wind, the mountains, and the natural world. Ocarinas are small, vessel-shaped flutes with a pure, clear tone used in many traditions.

## Meditation Bells & Whistles

Bells have been used in spiritual practice across every tradition — from Buddhist temple bells to Christian church bells, Tibetan tingshas to shamanic whistles. Their clear, penetrating tone cuts through mental noise, marks transitions, and calls the mind to attention.

Shamanic whistles — used particularly in Andean tradition — are used to call in the winds, the directions, and the spirits of the natural world. Their high, clear tone carries intention far into the spirit world.

## Wind Chimes

Wind chimes bring the healing power of sound into your home and garden — their tones shifting with the breeze, creating an ever-changing soundscape that is both meditative and energetically clearing. Tuned wind chimes — such as the Koshi and Heola ranges — are crafted to specific musical intervals and elemental tunings, producing sounds of exceptional beauty and resonance.

**Koshi chimes** are tuned to the four elements — Earth, Water, Fire, and Air — each producing a unique crystalline sound. **Heola chimes** are tuned to planetary frequencies. **Woodstock chimes** are precision-tuned to specific musical scales.

## Using World Instruments in Your Practice

### For Meditation

Strike a singing bowl or tingsha to open and close your meditation. Hold a rattle or drum lightly in your lap as a grounding anchor. Play a flute or panpipe recording as a meditative soundscape. See our [Meditation Guide](/pages/meditation-guide) and [How to Meditate with Crystals guide](/pages/how-to-meditate-with-crystals).

### For Space Clearing

Sound is one of the most powerful space clearing tools available — vibration moves through walls, furniture, and objects, reaching places that smoke cannot. Strike a singing bowl in each corner of a room, shake a rattle around the perimeter, or ring a bell to break up stagnant energy. See our [Energy Cleansing guide](/pages/energy-cleansing-explained).

### For Ceremony & Sacred Space

Instruments mark the opening and closing of ceremony, call in the directions and elements, and create a sacred atmosphere. The drum holds the heartbeat of the ceremony; the rattle calls in the spirits; the flute opens the heart; the singing bowl closes and integrates. See our [Creating a Sacred Space guide](/pages/creating-a-sacred-space) and [Shamanic Journeying Guide](/pages/shamanic-journeying-guide).

### For Sound Healing

Sound healing uses the vibration of instruments to restore balance and promote wellbeing. Singing bowls, drums, rattles, and chimes all have their place in a home sound healing practice. See our [Sound Healing at Home guide](/pages/sound-healing-at-home).

### For Fire Ceremony

Drums and rattles are central to fire ceremony — their rhythm holding the energy of the fire and the circle, calling in the spirits, and supporting the release of what is being offered to the flames. See our [Fire Ceremony Guide](/pages/fire-ceremony-guide).

## Caring for Your Instruments

- Cleanse new instruments with smoke ([sage](/collections/smudge-wands-loose-incense-c161), [palo santo](/collections/palo-santo-c87), or [copal resin](/collections/swift-lite-charcoal-gum-resin-incense-c159)) before first use
- Introduce yourself to each instrument — hold it, play it gently, and set a clear intention for your work together
- Store instruments away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures
- Natural skin drums need warming before playing and careful storage away from damp
- Treat your instruments with reverence — they are sacred allies
