We’ve had a busy few weeks here at Sacred Essence, we’ve been enjoying the lighter mornings and evenings at our shop here in Coniston. With the Spring Equinox now behind us we are looking to the next few months, some spring cleaning and most importantly spring cleansing.
What is spring cleansing?
Spring cleansing involves clearing out negative energy to make way for new beginnings and positive energy. Spring is often considered an ideal time for cleansing your home as Spring is associated with rebirth, renewal, and new beginnings. As nature awakens from its winter slumber, it's a natural time for us to shed the old and embrace the new. Cleansing your home during this season aligns with the symbolic significance of renewal and growth.
Energy shifts
We believe Spring brings about shifts in energy. As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, there's a sense of revitalisation and rejuvenation in the air. Cleansing your home during this time can help align the energy within your space with the positive, vibrant energy of the season. As well as this, during the winter months our homes can accumulate stagnant energy, both physically and energetically.
Prepare for your cleanse
By clearing out clutter, releasing negative energy, and creating a clean, organised environment, you're setting the stage for positive changes and opportunities to manifest in your life. After clearing clutter we like to cleanse the area further using the smudging technique which usually involves burning sacred herbs like White Sage or Palo Santo.
Choosing your smudging tools

Smudge wand
A smudge wand, also known as a smudge stick is a tool used in various spiritual practices, particularly within Native American traditions and other indigenous cultures. It typically consists of dried herbs bundled together into a chunky stick. The most common herb used in smudge sticks is white sage, although other herbs like cedar, sweetgrass, and Palo Santo are also popular.
White sage clusters
White sage clusters are bundles of dried white sage leaves which are more often than not combined with other herbs such as; rosemary, eucalyptus and lavender. White sage smudging is thought to bring spiritual benefits such as neutralising energetic smog, eliminating airborne pathogens, and clearing negative energy and spiritual impurities. This wonder incense can also bring balance to mind, body, and soul. As well as help with tension relief, mood elevation, and stress alleviation.
How to cleanse with white sage

We actually like to select multiple incenses for a cleanse; one to cleanse and purify and a second to create ambiance and calm after the cleanse. We also like to use prayer feather to aid in the smoke direction.
Our suggestion for cleansing smudge sticks here
Begin by preparing the space by opening the windows and doors to allow negative energy to leave the space. You want a good flow of air during and after the smudging. Then set some intentions. What are you looking for? Clarity, a release of negative energy, purification of your space? Hold the sage bundle at the end opposite the leaves, ignite the leaves and let the flame catch and then gently blow it out so the sage is smouldering and producing smoke. Use the feather to guide the smoke around your space clearing any areas that may harness negative energy. You can also focus on entryways and windows to cleanse the energy as it enters the space. While doing this, continue to focus on your intentions. We like to end the ritual with gratitude, thanking the sage for its cleansing properties.

Why use a prayer feather?
A feather is a representation or a tool to remind us to connect and bridge the realms between our world and the spiritual world. They flow through the air in a variety of ways that helps when smudging with incense. Cleansing auras, spaces and places is said to cleanse the negative spirits away allowing the good Spirits in returning holding us and reminding us who we are. The feather is used to gently waft the smoke in specific directions, ensuring that the cleansing smoke reaches all areas of the person or space being smudged.
Maintain Positive Energy
To maintain the positive energy in your space, consider incorporating regular smudging rituals into your routine, particularly during times of transition or when you feel the need to cleanse your environment.
We hope this had given you some guidance on trying a spring cleanse for yourself. We always feel a sense of renewal after a space cleanse, it sets us up for the new season and brings positive energy and intentions into our space.
Wondering how to get started and which smudging wand to choose? You can always send us a message about your wants and needs and we can look at the options with you. We are a small friendly team and love talking about incense!
