Mestana | Mesa Cloth

A mesa cloth, also referred to as a personal altar cloth, holds profound personal significance for shamans, and it is utilized for the greater good in various spiritual practices. The term "mesa" derives from "mestanna," signifying the high plains. These sacred textiles from the Q'ero Paqo shamans in Peru are highly esteemed and serve as personal altar cloths for rituals and ceremonies.

We are privileged to provide these extraordinary textile weavings from the Indigenous Q'ero people in Peru, which are renowned as some of the most potent textile creations worldwide, including the Mestana or Mesa Cloth. Our textiles are sourced from Qero Paqo, Native American Indian traditions, Tibetan Spirits, and our very own Sacred Essence Brand. These textiles are not only powerful tools for spiritual practices but also beautiful expressions of artistry and cultural preservation.

A Mestana or Mesa Cloth is a sacred textile of various sizes, used for diverse spiritual purposes. It is essentially an altar cloth that carries deep sacred significance, as the term "altar" itself implies a place of reverence and sacredness. Thus, a Mesa Cloth serves as an altar cloth, an altar (Mesa), and an inner cloth, sometimes known as a Wachala or Unkuna. While some locals may colloquially refer to these cloths as "tablecloths," it's important to understand that they are not used for ordinary tables but for the sacred tables of altars, embodying the essence of sacredness.

These cloths are adorned with intricate meanings, depicting aspects such as family, geographical origin, spiritual stature, and the specific energy associated with the cloth, such as water, the sun, stars, vibrancy, or tranquility. Each cloth serves a unique purpose and carries its own narrative, often varying in size and design.

The Q'ero people, descendants of the ancient Incas, craft these storytelling textiles using traditional methods, guided by their medicine people, known as "Paqos." Through these textiles, the Q'ero Paqos preserve and transmit their healing wisdom, beliefs, and cultural traditions. Their core philosophy, "Ayni," underscores the importance of reciprocity, balance, and harmony with the Earth and all living beings. The Q'ero people follow a shamanic path that honors all aspects of existence as sacred, including plants, stones, and animals. They are forward-thinking individuals who live with profound reverence and respect for Mother Earth, known as "Pachamama" in their native Quechua language, and are committed to preserving the planet for future generations.
