Shamanic 4 Directions Wachala Inner Cloth (W006) Purple – Andean Ritual Textile

Shamanic 4 Directions Wachala Textile • Mesa Inner Cloth • Deep Purple Tones

This Shamanic 4 Directions Wachala Inner Cloth (W006) – Purple is a sacred Andean inner textile traditionally used within mesa medicine bundles.

Known by various names depending on region and lineage — Wachala, Unkuna, Ritual Cloth, Despacho Cloth, Blessing Textile, Centrepiece Cloth — this textile is smaller than a Mestana (outer mesa cloth) and larger than small personal wrapping cloths.

It is placed inside a mesa altar bundle to represent the inner world, while the outer cloth (Mestana) represents the outer world.

Fresh off the loom and not previously used in ceremony, this beautifully finished textile features woven archetypes of the Four Directions and protective eye motifs along its edges. Its rich purple tones carry symbolism of spiritual depth, wisdom and sacred connection.

Purple Symbolism

Within spiritual traditions, purple is often associated with:

  • Spiritual insight and higher awareness
  • Intuition and inner vision
  • Sacred authority and wisdom
  • Transformation of consciousness

In Andean weaving, rich purple tones may symbolise depth of spirit and connection between the earthly and celestial realms. This colour supports meditation, ceremonial focus and alignment with higher guidance while remaining grounded in tradition.

Four Directions Represented

This Wachala carries the traditional archetypes of Andean cosmology:

  • South: Serpent / Snake — Transformation and grounding wisdom
  • West: Jaguar / Mountain Lion — Strength and protection
  • North: Hummingbird — Joy and courage on the sacred journey
  • East: Eagle / Condor — Vision and higher awareness

Eyes of protection are woven along the edges, symbolising watchfulness and spiritual safeguarding.

What Is a Wachala / Inner Cloth?

An inner cloth is a sacred textile used within Andean shamanic practice.

It may serve to:

  • Wrap and hold sacred objects, stones and kuyas

  • Function as a centrepiece during ritual work

  • Hold prayers and intentions

  • Act as a despacho or offering cloth

  • Be placed within a larger mesa cloth (Mestana)

The Wachala represents the inner landscape — personal transformation, spiritual alignment and intention — while the outer cloth represents engagement with the outer world.

These textiles are traditionally handmade by families connected to Andean spiritual lineages and master weavers of Chinchero in the High Andes.

Uses in Practice

This Wachala may be used for:

  • Wrapping sacred artefacts

  • Client work (placing beneath candles or sacred items)

  • Chakra or energy work during healing sessions

  • Personal altar centrepiece

Though rooted in Andean tradition, it may also serve as a sacred textile for personal ceremonial practice.

Hierarchy of Cloth Types

  • Wachala / Unkuna: Inner cloth (this item)

  • Mestana: Larger outer mesa cloth

Despacho cloths are typically larger and ideally suited for extended altar or offering work.
