How Backflow Incense Works & How to Use It

Backflow incense cones are formed with a hollow channel through their base. When the cone is lit and positioned correctly, cooled smoke travels down through this channel and into the burner, creating a cascading waterfall effect.

To use:

1. Place the burner on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.
2. Light the tip of the cone.
3. Allow the flame to burn for around 4–8 seconds, or until the tip is glowing.
4. Gently blow out the flame.
5. Place the cone directly over the smoke opening in the backflow burner.
6. Allow several minutes for the downward smoke effect to develop.

For the best result, use indoors away from fans, open windows, air-conditioning vents or other draughts. Even light air movement can disturb the cascade.

Dhoop Cones vs Backflow Cones

Traditional dhoop or standard incense cones and backflow cones are designed differently.

Traditional dhoop cones:

• normally produce smoke that rises
• can be used with a standard heat-resistant incense holder
• do not require a specialised waterfall burner
• are mainly chosen for fragrance and traditional incense use

Backflow cones:

• contain a hollow channel through the base
• are designed for compatible waterfall burners

Although backflow cones are sometimes described as “backflow dhoop cones”, the hollow channel is the key feature that distinguishes them from ordinary solid cones.

Residue & Getting the Best Waterfall Effect

A light oily or aromatic residue can sometimes appear on the burner after backflow incense has been used. This is normal and occurs as incense smoke and aromatic particles cool and collect on the burner.

Always protect the furniture beneath your burner with a suitable heat-resistant mat or tray.

Once completely cool, residue can usually be wiped away with a damp cloth.

If the waterfall effect is weak or the smoke rises instead of falling, check that:
