Description & Symbols: Traditionally worn by shamans, the black in this poncho symbolizes protection and invisibility, while the brown stripe represents Pachamama (Earth). Lightweight and soft to the touch, the poncho may exhibit slight variations in the stripe pattern.

Shamans often wear black due to ancient customs, as it is believed to ward off and protect by making them less visible. Black is harder to see, and many who wear brightly colored ponchos choose to wear black underneath to maintain their energetic integrity.

Ponchos vary widely in type and purpose:

Brightly colored ceremonial ponchos are used by many cultures to symbolize tradition and status. They are adorned with vibrant patterns and colors, reflecting their ceremonial significance.

Some Qero shamans prefer subtle, blending colors like brown and vanilla, which are often worn by everyday people in South America. These ponchos may feature unique embroidery with personal symbology, and the colors and patterns hold deep meaning.

Shamans frequently wear two ponchos depending on the season. The "barrel poncho," typically in vanilla or black, is stitched down the sides and resembles a jumper without arms. It is used for warmth and invisibility. Over this, they wear a more decorative poncho.

In contemporary use, many individuals opt for a black poncho with subtle lines. For example, brown may represent Earth, fertility, and Pachamama, while rainbow stripes symbolize a bridge between worlds and the jaguar medicine for transformation.
