Orthoceras, meaning "straight horn," is a genus of extinct nautiloid cephalopods that thrived during the Paleozoic Era, particularly in the Ordovician and Silurian periods, around 485 to 443 million years ago. These ancient marine creatures possessed long, straight, conical shells divided into chambers by septa, with a central tube called a siphuncle running through them. This structure allowed Orthoceras to control its buoyancy in the ocean.
The offered Orthoceras fossil measures between 3 to 7cm depending on its shape. It has been carefully extracted from the limestone deposits of Morocco, a region renowned for its rich fossil beds. The fossil showcases the characteristic segmented shell structure, providing insight into the morphology of these ancient cephalopods.
