The wax needs time to warm up and melt. Burning the candle for less than the recommended time will usually result in a hole burning down the middle of the candle and the wick will eventually drown. Always burn candles on suitable surfaces, preferably a candle holder or fire-proof dish, which will also catch any dripping wax.
