A shamanic rattle is a traditional percussion instrument used in ceremony, healing practices, and journeying traditions across many indigenous cultures. The rhythmic sound of the rattle is used to focus attention, clear energy, and guide meditative or trance states. In Amazonian traditions such as the Shipibo culture, gourd rattles filled with seeds are commonly used by shamans during healing ceremonies, prayer, and spiritual work.

These rattles are made from a natural fruit locally known as Mate (Mates Burilados when carved and decorated). The gourds are harvested, carefully hollowed, cleaned and dried before being filled with seeds or pulses to create sound.

Artisans then carve and hand-paint each piece using traditional decorative techniques distinctive to the Huancayo region of central Peru.

Huancayo is the capital of the Junín region and is widely recognised for its strong artisan economy and richly illustrated craft traditions.

The making of these rattles supports local family trade networks and regional craft preservation.
