Smudging or the burning of sacred herbs to purify and cleanse, is an ancient ritual that has been practiced for centuries. Sage, (white sage, blue sage, Californian white, black sage) a plant originally used by Indigenous peoples of North America found it to hold profound spiritual significance and was used in ceremonies to clear negative energy, invite healing, and connect with their sacred practices. The practice of smudging with sage has been passed down through generations, a practice intertwined with their identity, beliefs, and connection to the land.

These days smudging is often associated with mindfulness, meditation, and home cleansing rituals. Offering people a way to refresh the energy in their surroundings, clear their minds, and cultivate a sense of peace and harmony, and even to encourage stress relief.
What is smudging?
Smudging involves burning certain herbs to create smoke, which is then used for purification, spiritual cleansing, and healing. It can be used to carry prayers, neutralise negative energies, and clear emotional, spiritual, and physical spaces.

Why should I Smudge with Sage?
Space Cleansing
Sage smoke can remove negative or stagnant energy from spaces, objects, and individuals. It can be used to refresh the energy in a home or during transitions, such as starting a new job, seasonal change or easing upheaval during a transitional time in life. How to Perform a Sage Smudging Ritual
To begin, you’ll need:
- A bundle of sage or loose sage leaves.
- A Incense smudge dish to catch the ashes.
- A feather (optional) to direct the smoke.
Step-by-Step Smudging Process:
Set Your Intention: Before lighting the sage, set a clear intention for why you are smudging. Whether it’s to cleanse your home, release negative emotions, or invite peace, focus on your purpose.
Light the Sage: Use a match or lighter to ignite the end of the sage bundle. Let it catch fire briefly, then gently blow out the flame to allow the sage to smoulder and produce smoke.
Direct the Smoke: Use your hand or a feather to waft the smoke around your space, yourself, or any objects you wish to cleanse. Pay attention to corners, doorways, and windows, as these areas are believed to trap stagnant energy.
Focus on Cleansing: As you move through the space, keep your mind focused on the intention you set. Visualise the smoke clearing away negativity, and imagine fresh, positive energy filling the space.
Extinguish the Sage: Once you feel your space is cleansed, extinguish the sage by pressing it into the fireproof bowl or earth, ensuring it is completely out.
Smudging with feathers
Feathers are often used in smudging ceremonies to help direct the smoke around the room or over people. They add a ceremonial aspect to the ritual and are often chosen with special intention. They are widely used as ceremonial healing tools. Celebrating weddings, gifting one to honour this celebration to clearing, cleansing and smudging with them. The best way to respect our world and to protect the birds from being farmed is by using replica feathers.
Smudge fans are crafted collections of feathers that provide more control over directing the smoke. They are often hand-made and carry spiritual symbolism in their creation, making them powerful tools for ritual work.
