Chakra series: balance and well being in the winter
Here begins a new seasonal series on our blog, our Chakra series. Beginning with how to balance your chakras in the winter.
A topic we are passionate about here at Sacred Essence, and which we talk a lot about over on our social media (Instagram & Facebook), Chakras affect our entire wellbeing. Paying attention to moments where we feel off balance can allow us to make movements to centre ourselves. This in turn can improve immunity and protect our energy.
The winter months for so many of us mean darkness, and when coupled with the pressures of the festive season, it can mean that when Christmas comes around our energy is depleted and our immunity is at an all time low. Like nature lying dormant through the winter months, this time of year lends itself to calm, resting and hibernation something that our modern world so often ignores. Simple daily practices that pay attention to the 7 chakras can allow us to feel more imbalance and better equipped to deal with the change in daylight and colder days.
Lets look into the chakras a little further:
What are chakras?

There are seven chakras, and they relate to the way in which energy moves through the body. They are linked to our key meridians that connects to our endocrine system (the glands responsible for creating hormones). The positions of the chakra's correspond to the positions of these glands and can have an effect on their function. When the chakras are blocked we can feel the imbalance which can cause physical and mental issues.
When the chakras are open it allows us to feel harmony through the body, spirit and mind.
Unblocking them means centring and aligning the chakras so that energy can flow freely through the body.
What are the 7 chakras called?
Root Chakra
The root chakra is associated with feeling grounded. It sits at the base of the spine and is considered a foundation chakra. When its blocked it can lead to all sorts of feelings, including insecurity and lack of trust. Its the chakra that attends to our basic needs. Its also the chakra that is associated with our ability to care for ourselves and others.

How we can help to balance the chakras in winter
The winter, for many people, can bring feelings of low energy and depletion. But winter can be a time of abundance if you make sure to nurture and nourish your body. Balance your chakras with meditation, take part in gentle breathwork and get outside as much as possible. Finding the light is important and we can do this by lighting candles and space clearing with incense.

Why the root chakra is especially important in winter

The root chakra is associated with our energy centre, its home to our survival instinct. It’s here where imbalance in the chakra can manifest itself as depletion. This chakra is particularly affected by nature and spending time outside. Remember that the foundation and core of our being connects us to the earth. It also represents our basic needs such as food, warmth, and shelter. Nurturing your root chakra with plenty of rest, sleep and good food through the winter months can help to keep your immune system in order.
As a foundation chakra it is also the ideal place to start when practicing movement with an aim of opening and releasing energy throughout all 7 chakras. You can do this by practicing gentle yoga exercises, walking barefoot in nature and practicing affirmations.
