Q'ero Paqos Shamanic 4 Directions Wachala Inner Cloth (W008) – Andean Ritual Textile

Shamanic 4 Directions Wachala Textile • Mesa Inner Cloth • Rich & Vibrant

This Shamanic 4 Directions Wachala Textile is a sacred Andean inner cloth traditionally used within mesa medicine bundles.

Known by various names depending on region and tradition — Wachala, Unkuna, Ritual Cloth, Despacho Cloth, Blessing Textile, Centrepiece Cloth — this style of textile is smaller than a Mestana (outer mesa cloth) and larger than small personal wraps.

It is used inside a mesa altar bundle to represent the inner world, while the outer cloth (Mestana) represents the outer world.

Woven with rich symbolic meaning, this textile embodies Andean cosmology through archetypes of the Four Directions and protective motifs.

Eyes of protection are woven along the edges, symbolising watchfulness and spiritual safeguarding.

What Is a Wachala / Inner Cloth?

An inner cloth is a sacred textile used within Andean shamanic practice.

It serves to:

  • Wrap and hold sacred objects, stones and kuyas

  • Function as a centrepiece during ritual work

  • Hold prayers and intentions

  • Act as a despacho or offering cloth

  • Be placed within a larger mesa cloth (Mestana)

The Wachala represents the inner landscape — personal transformation, intention and spiritual development — while the outer cloth represents interaction with the world.

These textiles are often handmade by families connected to Andean spiritual traditions, including the wives and community members of Q’ero Paqos and Chinchero weavers.

Uses in Practice

The Wachala may be used for:

  • Wrapping sacred artefacts

  • Client work (placing beneath candles or sacred items)

  • Chakra work during healing sessions

  • Personal altar centrepiece

  • Despacho or blessing rituals

  • Holding talismans and transformation objects

Though rooted in Andean tradition, it may also serve as a sacred textile for personal practice and ceremonial use.

Hierarchy of Cloth Types

  • Wachala / Unkuna: Inner cloth (this item)

  • Mestana: Larger outer mesa cloth

  • Manta Cloth: Much larger carrying or wrapping cloth

Despacho cloths are typically larger, ideally suited for extended altar or offering work.
