The Lotus Pool Waterfall Backflow Incense Burner is a serene, low-profile ceramic burner inspired by the stillness of a lotus pond.

Designed specifically for backflow incense cones, also known as waterfall incense cones, it creates a soft cascading smoke effect as the fragrant mist travels downward and gathers gently in the pool below.

NB: A backflow incense cone is required to create the waterfall effect. These cones have a small hollow channel through the base that allows smoke to travel downwards into the burner.

Ordinary dhoop or solid incense cones produce smoke that naturally rises and will not create the intended cascading effect.

The waterfall effect may not appear immediately. Depending on the cone, burner temperature and airflow, it can take several minutes and occasionally up to around 10 minutes for the smoke to begin flowing fully.

How a Backflow Incense Burner Works

Backflow incense burners work differently from traditional incense holders.

A backflow cone contains a hollow channel through its base. Once the cone is lit, blown out and allowed to smoulder, cooled smoke passes down through this channel and into the burner.

The Lotus Pool design guides the smoke downwards before allowing it to collect softly in the wide base, creating a mist-like pool effect before dispersing into the surrounding air.

For the clearest result, the opening in the cone needs to be correctly aligned with the corresponding opening in the burner.

Lotus-Inspired Design

The lotus is widely associated across Asian spiritual and artistic traditions with purity, renewal, spiritual development and the ability to rise above difficult conditions.

This burner takes inspiration from the visual stillness of a lotus pond, with its broad base allowing the smoke to settle before drifting away.

Its low-profile design makes it particularly suited to:

  • meditation spaces
  • yoga corners
  • home altars
  • Reiki or therapy rooms
  • desks and shelves
  • relaxation areas
  • thoughtful spiritual gifts

The lotus carries important symbolism in several religious traditions, so its meaning can vary considerably between cultures and practices.

Backflow Cones vs Dhoop Cones

Not all incense cones will create the waterfall effect.

Backflow / Waterfall Incense Cones

  • contain a hollow channel through the base
  • are designed for compatible backflow burners
  • allow smoke to travel downwards
  • create the cascading waterfall effect

Traditional Dhoop or Standard Cones

  • are generally solid
  • produce smoke that rises naturally
  • can be used with standard heat-resistant incense holders
  • will not create the waterfall effect

For the intended visual effect, always choose incense specifically labelled Backflow, Waterfall or Backflow Dhoop.

How to Use

Place the burner on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.

Position a backflow incense cone at the top, aligning the hollow opening in the base of the cone with the smoke channel in the burner.

Light the tip of the cone and allow the flame to burn for a few seconds until the tip is glowing.

Gently blow out the flame and allow the cone to smoulder.

After several minutes, the smoke should begin travelling down into the burner and gathering softly in the pool below.

For the smoothest waterfall effect, use indoors away from open windows, doors, fans, air-conditioning vents or other draughts.

Getting the Best Waterfall Effect

Backflow smoke is sensitive to air movement.

For best results:

  • place the burner on a flat surface
  • centre the cone over the opening
  • use a genuine backflow cone
  • keep the burner away from draughts
  • allow several minutes for the smoke to cool
  • avoid moving the burner once the cone is lit

If the smoke rises instead of cascading, first check the cone alignment and surrounding airflow.

Backflow Incense Residue

Backflow incense can leave a light oily or aromatic residue on the burner as smoke cools and travels through the ceramic channels.

This is normal.

Because some residue may also settle beneath the burner, protect furniture with a suitable heat-resistant mat or tray.

Once the burner is completely cool, wipe it gently with a damp cloth.

Regular cleaning helps keep the smoke pathways clear and the ceramic looking its best.

A Calming Addition to Your Space

The combination of fragrance and slowly pooling smoke creates a soft visual focal point for meditation, journalling, yoga, relaxation or quiet evening rituals.

Different backflow fragrances can be chosen to suit the atmosphere you want to create, from woody and resinous scents to floral or herbal blends.

The wide lotus pool design also makes this burner an attractive gift for incense lovers or anyone creating a peaceful meditation or relaxation space.

Quick FAQs

Does this burner include incense cones?

No. Backflow incense cones are sold separately.

What type of incense cones do I need?

Use cones specifically labelled backflow, waterfall or backflow dhoop.

Can I use ordinary incense cones?

Ordinary cones may burn in a suitable holder, but they will not create the intended waterfall effect because they do not contain the required hollow smoke channel.

Can I use incense sticks with this burner?

No. The waterfall feature is specifically designed for compatible backflow incense cones.

Why isn't the smoke flowing straight away?

The smoke needs time to cool and begin travelling through the burner. The effect can take several minutes and sometimes up to around 10 minutes to develop fully.

Why is the smoke rising instead of pooling?

Check that the cone is correctly aligned with the burner opening and that there are no nearby draughts. Even light air movement can disturb the waterfall effect.

Is residue normal?

Yes. Backflow incense can leave a light aromatic or oily residue as the smoke cools. Allow the burner to cool completely before wiping it clean.

What size is the burner?

Approximately 5cm high × 11.5cm wide × 11.5cm deep.

Is it suitable as a gift?

Yes. Its calm lotus-inspired design and low-profile form make it an attractive gift for incense, meditation and relaxation enthusiasts.

Care & Safety

Always place the burner on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.

Protect furniture beneath the burner from heat, ash and possible incense residue.

Never leave burning incense unattended.

Keep away from curtains, paper, bedding and other flammable materials.

Keep burning incense and the hot burner away from babies, children and pets.

Use in a well-ventilated room and avoid directly inhaling concentrated smoke.

The ceramic and cone may remain hot after use. Allow everything to cool completely before touching, moving or cleaning.
