Palo Santo – Benefits, Uses & How to Burn Palo Santo

Palo Santo — meaning “Holy Wood” in Spanish — is one of the most beloved sacred tools in spiritual practice. With its warm, sweet, woody fragrance and powerful cleansing properties, Palo Santo has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples of South America in ceremony, healing, and meditation. Today it's treasured worldwide for its ability to clear energy, uplift the spirit, and create a sacred atmosphere.

What Is Palo Santo?

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) is a wild tree native to the coast of South America, particularly Peru and Ecuador. Sustainably harvested Palo Santo comes only from naturally fallen trees and branches — the tree is never cut down. The wood must age for several years after falling before its aromatic oils develop fully, making ethically sourced Palo Santo a precious and sacred material.

Benefits of Palo Santo

  • Energy cleansing – clears negative and stagnant energy from spaces and people
  • Uplifting – raises the vibration of a space and invites positive energy
  • Calming – reduces stress, anxiety, and mental chatter
  • Meditation support – deepens focus and creates a sacred atmosphere
  • Creativity – said to stimulate creative thinking and inspiration
  • Natural insect repellent – the smoke naturally deters insects
  • Aromatherapy – the sweet, woody scent is deeply grounding and comforting

How to Burn Palo Santo

  1. Hold the Palo Santo stick at a 45-degree angle
  2. Light the tip with a match or lighter
  3. Allow it to burn for 30–60 seconds
  4. Gently blow out the flame — the wood will smoulder and produce fragrant smoke
  5. Hold over a fireproof bowl or abalone shell to catch any ash
  6. Move through your space, directing the smoke with intention
  7. The stick will naturally extinguish itself after a few minutes — this is normal
  8. Rest in a fireproof bowl when not in use

How to Use Palo Santo

For Space Cleansing

Move through each room clockwise, directing smoke into corners and doorways. Set an intention to clear negativity and invite positive energy. Palo Santo is gentler than sage, making it ideal for regular, everyday cleansing.

For Meditation

Light Palo Santo before your meditation practice to create a focused, sacred atmosphere. The grounding scent helps quiet the mind and deepen your practice.

For Personal Cleansing

Waft the smoke around your body from feet to head, setting an intention to release stress, negativity, or heavy energy you may have picked up during the day.

For Crystals

Pass your crystals through Palo Santo smoke to cleanse and recharge them. A wonderful alternative to sage for more delicate or light-coloured crystals.

Palo Santo vs Sage – Which to Choose?

Both are powerful cleansing tools but with different energies. Sage is stronger and more purifying — ideal for deep clearing. Palo Santo is gentler, uplifting, and more aromatic — perfect for everyday use and inviting positive energy. Many people use both together. Read our full Sage vs Palo Santo guide for more detail.
