How to Charge Crystals – A Complete Guide

Once your crystal has been cleansed, the next step is to charge it — restoring its energy, amplifying its natural properties, and preparing it for intentional work. The distinction between the two practices matters: cleansing clears, resets, and neutralises. Charging actively fills. Think of cleansing as clearing the slate and charging as writing something new on it — deliberately, with full attention to what you want the crystal to carry for you.

Like cleansing, charging does not need to be elaborate or time-consuming. A night on the windowsill under the full moon, a few hours resting on a Selenite plate, or a few deliberate minutes held in both hands with clear intention — any of these is sufficient. The practice matters more than the method. Choose what feels natural, do it with genuine awareness, and trust that consistency over time is what builds the depth of your relationship with a stone.

Cleansing vs Charging – What’s the Difference?

Cleansing removes accumulated or stagnant energy, returning the crystal to a neutral, clear state. Charging actively fills the crystal with fresh energy, amplifying its natural vibration and aligning it to your current intention. Both matter, and they work best in sequence: cleanse first to clear what has been absorbed, then charge to fill with what you want to cultivate. If you haven’t cleansed your crystal yet, start with our How to Cleanse Crystals guide before proceeding.

7 Methods for Charging Crystals

1. Full Moon

Moonlight — particularly the full moon — is the most universally recommended method for charging crystals, and for good reason. The full moon is the point of maximum lunar energy in the monthly cycle, and placing crystals under its light from dusk to dawn harnesses that energy at its peak. The moon’s energy is gentle, feminine, and deeply restorative — it charges without the risk of fading or damage that direct sunlight carries — making this the safest and most broadly applicable charging method available. Build a full moon cleanse-and-charge practice into your monthly rhythm: set your crystals out at dusk, leave them through the night, bring them in before the sun rises. The difference in how they feel the next morning is often immediately noticeable. Any phase of the moon will charge your crystals, but the full moon is where that effect is most concentrated.

2. Sunlight

Morning sunlight is energising, activating, and particularly well-suited to crystals associated with vitality, confidence, action, and solar qualities. It charges quickly and with a different quality of energy than moonlight — more direct, more active, less restorative and more galvanising. The important caveat: prolonged direct sunlight will permanently and irreversibly fade the colour of many crystals. Limit exposure to 1–2 hours of gentle morning sun, never midday or afternoon, and only for stones known to be sun-safe.

3. Earth

Burying your crystal in the earth — or placing it in a pot of good soil — reconnects it to the ground from which it came, providing a slow, deep, grounding charge that is particularly suited to stones associated with the root chakra, protection, and earthing energy. It is also especially effective for crystals that have been through heavy or sustained use and need a more thorough restoration than a night under the moon provides. Leave for 24 hours to several days, wrap delicate or water-sensitive stones in a natural cloth, and mark the spot. There is a quality of completeness to an earth charge that other methods don’t quite replicate.

4. Selenite

Selenite is one of the very few crystals that never needs cleansing or charging itself — it has an inexhaustible, self-renewing energy that it continuously radiates. Placing your crystals on a Selenite plate or beside a Selenite wand for several hours will both cleanse and gently but consistently charge them, without any further action required from you. This makes it the most effortlessly reliable charging method available, and a Selenite charging plate is one of the most practically useful tools in any crystal collection. It is also the ideal method for delicate, water-sensitive, or colour-sensitive stones that can’t safely be charged by other methods. Shop Selenite →

5. Other Crystals

Certain high-vibration crystals charge those placed near or on them, simply through the quality of energy they radiate. Clear Quartz is the most versatile — a cluster or geode will charge any crystal placed within or beside it, and amplify its properties at the same time. Amethyst clusters and Citrine work similarly. Place your crystal on or beside the charging crystal for several hours or overnight. This method has the additional benefit of creating a beautiful, intentional arrangement in your space. 6. Sound

Just as sound cleanses through vibration, it also charges — the sustained resonance of a singing bowl, tuning fork, or tingsha bells fills a crystal with a quality of vibrant, coherent energy that is immediately felt. It is one of the most practical methods for large collections, since you can charge many crystals simultaneously by arranging them near the instrument and allowing the sound to wash over all of them. Play or strike the instrument near your crystals for several minutes, allowing the tones to fully decay before you finish. Safe for all crystals. See our Sound Healing at Home guide for more.

7. Intention & Visualisation

Hold your crystal in both hands, close your eyes, and take several slow, full breaths to bring yourself into genuine stillness. Then visualise a bright, clear light — white or golden, whichever feels right — flowing from your hands into the stone, filling it completely until it is saturated with that quality of light. State your intention clearly, either aloud or silently: not a vague wish, but a specific, honest statement of what you would like the crystal to support you with. Hold that intention for a moment after you’ve stated it, and then let it go. This method is most effective when combined with a physical charging method rather than used alone — think of it as the final, personalising step that aligns the crystal specifically to you and your current intention, after the energy has been restored by moonlight, earth, or Selenite.

How Long Does Charging Take?

  • Moonlight — one full night, dusk to dawn
  • Sunlight — 1–2 hours of morning sun
  • Selenite or crystal cluster — a few hours to overnight
  • Earth burial — 24 hours to several days
  • Sound — several minutes of sustained tone
  • Intention — a few deliberate minutes

A charged crystal often feels different in the hand — lighter, warmer, more present. Trust that sense: if it feels right, it is.

How Often Should You Charge?

  • Crystals used for healing or emotional work — cleanse and recharge after every session
  • Crystals worn as jewellery or carried daily — weekly, or at each full moon
  • Display or ambient crystals — monthly, or at each full moon
  • Any time a crystal feels flat, heavy, or less responsive — cleanse first, then recharge
