How to Cleanse Crystals – A Complete Guide
Cleansing your crystals is one of the most important things you can do as a crystal keeper. Crystals absorb and hold energy — from the environments they pass through, the people who handle them, and the intentions they are used for. Regular cleansing clears this accumulated energy and restores your crystal to its natural, receptive state.
This guide covers every major cleansing method, which stones each method is safe for, and how often to cleanse your crystals.
Why Do Crystals Need Cleansing?
From the moment a crystal is mined, it passes through many hands — miners, traders, shop staff, and customers — before it reaches you. Each interaction leaves an energetic imprint. Once in your home, crystals continue to absorb energy from their surroundings and from the emotional and energetic work you use them for.
A crystal that hasn't been cleansed may feel heavy, dull, or less effective. Cleansing resets this — returning the crystal to a clear, neutral state so it can work at its full potential.
How to Cleanse Crystals – 8 Methods
1. Smoke Cleansing (Smudging)
Pass your crystal through the smoke of burning sage, palo santo, or incense for 20–30 seconds, holding the intention that all stagnant or unwanted energy is being cleared. This is one of the most traditional and widely used cleansing methods — safe for virtually all crystals.
- Safe for all crystals
- Use white sage, palo santo, or any cleansing incense
- See our full Smudging & Energy Cleansing Guide
2. Moonlight
Place your crystals outside or on a windowsill overnight under the light of the moon. The full moon is the most powerful time for cleansing and charging, but any phase will work. Leave them out from dusk to dawn for best results.
- Safe for all crystals
- Full moon is ideal — but any moon phase works
- Bring crystals in before direct sunlight if they are colour-sensitive (see Sunlight below)
3. Sound
Sound cleansing uses vibration to break up and clear stagnant energy. Strike a singing bowl, tingsha bells, or a tuning fork near your crystals and allow the sound to wash over them. This method is particularly effective for large collections — you can cleanse many crystals at once.
- Safe for all crystals
- Singing bowls, tingsha bells, tuning forks, or even clapping hands all work
- See our Sound Healing at Home guide
4. Running Water
Hold your crystal under running water — a natural stream is ideal, but tap water works — for 30–60 seconds while visualising impurities being washed away. Water is a powerful energetic cleanser, but it is not safe for all crystals.
- Safe for: Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, Carnelian, Tiger's Eye, Obsidian, Jasper, Agate
- Avoid for: Selenite, Desert Rose, Malachite, Pyrite, Hematite, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Fluorite, Calcite, Angelite, Celestite — these can dissolve, rust, or be damaged by water
5. Selenite
Selenite is one of the few crystals that never needs cleansing itself and has the ability to cleanse other crystals. Simply place your crystals on a selenite plate or beside a selenite wand for several hours or overnight.
- Safe for all crystals
- Ideal for delicate or water-sensitive stones
- A selenite charging plate is a practical addition to any crystal collection
6. Earth Burial
Bury your crystal in the earth — either directly in the garden or in a pot of soil — for 24 hours to several days. The earth absorbs and neutralises unwanted energy and reconnects the crystal to its natural origins. Mark the spot so you can find it again.
- Safe for most crystals
- Avoid for water-sensitive stones if the soil is damp
- Wrap delicate crystals in a natural cloth before burying
7. Sunlight
A few hours in morning sunlight can cleanse and energise many crystals. However, prolonged sun exposure can fade the colour of certain stones — use this method with care and limit exposure to 1–2 hours.
- Safe for: Clear Quartz, Carnelian, Tiger's Eye, Obsidian, Jasper, Black Tourmaline
- Avoid for: Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Aquamarine, Fluorite, Celestite, Opal — these can fade in direct sunlight
8. Breath & Intention
Hold your crystal in both hands, take a deep breath, and exhale sharply over the stone while holding a clear intention that all unwanted energy is released. Simple, immediate, and always available — this method works well between more thorough cleansing sessions.
- Safe for all crystals
- Best used as a quick reset between deeper cleansing sessions
Which Crystals Are Water-Sensitive?
As a general rule, avoid water cleansing for any crystal that:
- Ends in -ite (Selenite, Malachite, Calcite, Fluorite, Celestite, Angelite, Kyanite, Lepidolite)
- Contains iron (Pyrite, Hematite, Magnetite) — these can rust
- Is porous or layered (Turquoise, Lapis Lazuli, Opal)
When in doubt, use smoke, sound, moonlight, or selenite — all of which are safe for every crystal.
How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?
- New crystals — always cleanse before first use
- Crystals used for healing or emotional work — after every session
- Crystals worn as jewellery — weekly, or whenever they feel heavy
- Display crystals — monthly, or at each full moon
- Any time a crystal feels dull or less effective — trust your intuition
