How to Use Sage – A Complete Guide to Burning & Smudging with Sage
Burning sage — known as smudging — is one of the oldest and most widely practised forms of energy cleansing. Whether you're new to smudging or looking to deepen your practice, this guide covers everything you need to know about using sage safely and effectively.
Types of Sage for Smudging
White Sage (Salvia apiana)
The most popular and powerful smudging sage. White Sage has a strong, herbaceous scent and is highly effective at clearing negative energy, purifying spaces, and creating a clean energetic slate. Traditionally used by Native American peoples in ceremony and ritual.

Blue Sage
Gentler than White Sage, Blue Sage has a lighter, more floral scent. It's excellent for cleansing and is often used for healing, prosperity, and positive energy work. A good choice for those who find White Sage too intense.
Desert Sage
Also known as Sagebrush, Desert Sage has an earthy, camphor-like scent. It's used for purification and protection and is particularly good for clearing heavy or dense energies.
Sage Smudge Sticks
Sage bundled into a stick for easy, controlled burning. Available in various sizes — smaller sticks for personal use, larger ones for whole-home cleansing.

How to Light a Sage Stick
- Hold the sage stick at a 45-degree angle
- Light the tip with a match or lighter
- Allow it to catch flame for 5–10 seconds
- Gently blow out the flame so the sage smoulders and produces smoke
- Hold over a fireproof bowl or abalone shell to catch any falling ash
How to Smudge a Room with Sage
- Prepare the space – open windows and doors to allow energy to flow out
- Set your intention – decide what you're clearing and what you're inviting in
- Light your sage – as above, allow it to smoulder
- Start at the front door – move clockwise through the space
- Direct the smoke – use a feather or your hand to waft smoke into corners, along walls, around doorframes and windows
- Speak your intention – e.g. “I cleanse this space of all negativity. Only love and light remain.”
- Finish where you started – complete the circle at the front door
- Extinguish safely – press firmly into a fireproof bowl until the ember is out
How to Smudge Yourself
- Light your sage and allow it to smoulder
- Starting at your feet, waft the smoke upwards around your body
- Move up your legs, torso, arms, and over your head
- Pay extra attention to areas that feel tense or heavy
- Set an intention to release what no longer serves you
How to Smudge Crystals & Objects
Pass your crystals or objects through the sage smoke for 30–60 seconds while setting an intention to clear any previous energy. This is especially important for second-hand items or crystals that have been handled by many people.
