Smudging & Energy Cleansing Guide – How to Smudge Your Home
Smudging is the ancient practice of burning sacred herbs to cleanse a space, object, or person of negative or stagnant energy. Used for thousands of years by indigenous cultures around the world, smudging is one of the most powerful and immediate ways to shift the energy of your environment and restore a sense of peace, clarity, and balance.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging involves burning dried herbs — most commonly White Sage, Palo Santo, or other sacred plants — and directing the smoke around a space or person with intention. The smoke is believed to attach to negative energy and carry it away as it disperses. It's a practice of purification, protection, and renewal.
Smudging Tools
White Sage & Californian Sage
The most widely used smudging herb. White Sage has a strong, purifying energy that clears negative energy, bacteria, and stagnant vibrations from a space. Ideal for deep cleansing after illness, arguments, or moving into a new home.

Smudge Sticks & Loose Sage
Smudge sticks are bundles of dried herbs bound together for easy burning. Loose sage can be burned on a charcoal disc for a longer, more ceremonial burn.

Palo Santo
A sacred wood from South America with a warm, sweet, woody fragrance. Palo Santo is gentler than sage and is used to cleanse, uplift, and invite positive energy. It's also wonderful for meditation and creative work.

A feather or fan is traditionally used to direct the smoke around a space during smudging. Choose an ethically sourced feather to complete your smudging kit.

How to Smudge Your Home – Step by Step
- Set your intention – decide what you want to clear or invite in. Speak it aloud or hold it clearly in your mind.
- Open windows and doors – this allows the negative energy (and smoke) to leave the space.
- Light your smudge stick or Palo Santo – hold at a 45-degree angle and light the tip. Allow it to catch flame, then gently blow it out so it smoulders.
- Start at the front door – move clockwise through each room, directing smoke into corners, doorways, and windows where energy can stagnate.
- Use a feather or your hand – to waft the smoke around the space.
- Speak your intention – as you move through the space, repeat a mantra or prayer such as: “I cleanse this space of all negative energy. Only love and light may dwell here.”
- Extinguish safely – press the smudge stick firmly into a fireproof bowl or abalone shell to extinguish. Never leave burning unattended.
