NB: A backflow incense cone is required to create the waterfall effect. These cones have a small hollow channel through the base that allows smoke to travel downwards into the burner.

Ordinary dhoop or solid incense cones produce smoke that naturally rises and will not create the intended cascading effect.

The waterfall effect may not appear immediately. Depending on the cone, burner temperature and airflow, it can take several minutes and occasionally up to around 10 minutes for the smoke to begin flowing fully.

How a Backflow Incense Burner Works

A backflow incense burner works differently from a traditional incense holder.

Backflow incense cones contain a hollow channel through their base. Once the cone is lit, blown out and allowed to smoulder, cooled smoke passes through this channel and into the opening in the burner.

The internal pathways then guide the smoke down through the Buddha head design, allowing it to cascade from the ears and flow towards the base before dispersing into the surrounding air.

For the clearest effect, the opening in the cone needs to be aligned correctly with the opening in the burner.

Buddha-Inspired Design

The calm expression and bronze-effect finish give this compact burner a peaceful decorative presence.

Its smaller size makes it particularly suited to:

  • meditation corners
  • home altars
  • bedside tables
  • desks and shelves
  • Reiki or therapy rooms
  • relaxation spaces
  • thoughtful spiritual gifts

Buddha imagery is widely associated in contemporary interiors with stillness, reflection and meditation. The figure also has deep religious significance within Buddhist traditions, so it is best displayed and used respectfully.

Backflow Cones vs Dhoop Cones

Not all incense cones will create the waterfall effect.

Backflow / Waterfall Incense Cones

  • contain a hollow channel through the base
  • are designed for compatible backflow burners
  • allow smoke to travel downwards
  • create the cascading waterfall effect

Traditional Dhoop or Standard Cones

  • are generally solid
  • produce smoke that rises naturally
  • can be used with standard heat-resistant incense holders
  • will not create the waterfall effect

For the intended smoke display, always choose incense specifically labelled Backflow, Waterfall or Backflow Dhoop.

How to Use

Place the burner on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.

Position a backflow incense cone at the top, aligning the hollow opening in the base of the cone with the smoke channel in the burner.

Light the tip of the cone and allow the flame to burn for a few seconds until the tip is glowing.

Gently blow out the flame and allow the cone to smoulder.

After several minutes, the smoke should begin travelling down through the burner, flowing from the ears and towards the base.

For the smoothest waterfall effect, use indoors away from open windows, doors, fans, air-conditioning vents or other draughts.

Getting the Best Waterfall Effect

Backflow smoke is very sensitive to air movement.

For best results:

  • place the burner on a flat surface
  • centre the cone over the opening
  • use a genuine backflow cone
  • keep the burner away from draughts
  • allow several minutes for the smoke to cool
  • avoid moving the burner once the cone is lit

If the smoke rises instead of cascading, first check the cone alignment and airflow around the burner.

Backflow Incense Residue

Backflow incense can leave a light oily or aromatic residue on the burner as smoke cools and travels through the channels.

This is normal.

Because residue can also settle beneath the burner, protect furniture with a suitable heat-resistant mat, tray or other protected surface.

Once the burner is completely cool, wipe it gently with a soft damp cloth.

Regular cleaning helps keep the smoke pathways clear and the decorative finish looking its best.

A Calming Addition to Your Space

The combination of fragrance and slowly moving smoke creates a gentle focal point that can complement meditation, journalling, relaxation or quiet evening rituals.

Different backflow incense fragrances can be used to change the atmosphere, from woody and resinous scents to floral, herbal or fresh blends.

Its compact size and distinctive Buddha head design also make it a thoughtful gift for incense lovers, meditation enthusiasts or anyone creating a peaceful personal space.

Quick FAQs

Does this burner include incense cones?

No. Backflow incense cones are sold separately.

What type of incense cones do I need?

Use cones specifically labelled backflow, waterfall or backflow dhoop.

Can I use ordinary incense cones?

Ordinary cones may burn in a suitable holder, but they will not create the intended waterfall effect because they do not contain the required hollow channel.

Can I use incense sticks with this burner?

No. The waterfall feature is specifically designed for compatible backflow incense cones.

Why isn't the smoke flowing immediately?

The smoke needs time to cool and begin travelling through the burner. The effect can take several minutes and sometimes up to around 10 minutes to develop fully.

Where does the smoke flow?

When correctly aligned, the smoke is guided through the burner and cascades from the ears of the Buddha head towards the base.

Why is the smoke rising instead of cascading?

Check that the cone is correctly aligned with the opening and that there are no nearby draughts. Even light air movement can interrupt the waterfall effect.

Is residue normal?

Yes. Backflow incense can leave a light aromatic or oily residue as the smoke cools. Allow the burner to cool completely before wiping it clean.

What size is the burner?

Approximately 9cm high × 6cm wide × 6cm deep.

Is it suitable as a gift?

Yes. Its compact size, bronze-effect finish and calming smoke display make it an attractive gift for incense and meditation enthusiasts.

Care & Safety

Always place the burner on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.

Protect furniture beneath the burner from heat, ash and possible incense residue.

Never leave burning incense unattended.

Keep away from curtains, paper, bedding and other flammable materials.

Keep burning incense and the hot burner away from babies, children and pets.

Use in a well-ventilated room and avoid directly inhaling concentrated smoke.

The cone and burner may remain hot after use. Allow both to cool completely before touching, moving or cleaning.
