What is Palo Santo; Palo Santo incense sometimes known as Holy Wood incense; comes from the palo santo tree 'Busera graveolens'. It is a type of resinous wood dried naturally or some times kiln dried before being: Cut into incense sticks, Ground to make incense cones, Cold water distilled to extract Pure Essential oil and resin that in turn makes gum resin incense.

The tree is honoured, sustainably and ethically wild harvested. The re-planting and reforestation program extensive as this is extremely important for the the local villages and existence for future generations.

Palo Santo Benefits, Uses, Precautions, and How to Use?

Palo santo is a highly resinous wood incense. The appearance can change depending on the time, method and part of the tree the incense came from and how it was dried. Typically, the wood incense sticks are used in rituals and ceremony to cleanse away negative energies and spirits.

The incense sticks are lit. The desired effect will depend on the style and purpose by an individual. Typically the end is lit until it catches a-lite deeply. It will burn black initially. When the incense end is blown out, the incense turns to a white healing smoke.

Some shamans leave this lit and other re-lilting as required in a ceremony.

Palo santo wood due to it's natural resin finish, normally self extinguishes when left in a heat proof smudge bowl. How ever dabbing the end will help extinguish it quickly if this is rather desired than the slow smoulder to fully extinguished. Alternatively place in water.

Plantations tend to not desire to pay for these style of licence to proof what is natural to them.

USE- Use a heat resistant incense holder/burner. Set a clear intention. Lite the tip of the wood using a naked flame, carefully blow out the flame, once you can see embers allow the sacred smoke to smoulder and move to where it is needed. Palo Santo wood will burn itself out naturally so will need re-lighting if needed for longer usage.

Never leave unattended.

Suggestions for use- Using this sacred incense wood to smudge with you can either place it into a Palo Santo incense holder fit for purpose for ritual and ceremonial work. Using your hand or a feather to gently guide the smoke to cleanse and purify wherever the smoke needs to go this can be done in prayer, chanting or in silence. A wonderful way to clear and bring back balance with this beautiful ceremonial incense. Palo Santo is not like other incenses, it will burn for shorter durations so re-lite as needed.

NB: Ash will drop so its important to place on a heat resistant dish so not to incur damage. Areas must be well vented opening windows and doors to also allow negative energies to move away. Keep out of reach of children. When you have finished using make sure the wood stick is completely burned out.

How to burn incense sticks?

Gather Supplies: Incense sticks of your choice. An incense holder or burner.
