About:

Symbolism – Black & Red

In Andean textile language:

  • Black represents protection, depth and mountain strength

  • Red symbolises life force, vitality and sacred earth connection

Together, these colours embody grounded power — stability with living energy.

The woven “eyes of protection” along the seams serve as symbolic guardians, honouring and safeguarding the contents of the bag.

Ritual & Shamanic Context

Within Andean ceremonial tradition, woven bags are used to carry sacred items as an extension of the practitioner’s mesa (medicine bundle).

Spiritual practitioners may use such bags to carry:

  • Khuyas (medicine stones)

  • Coca leaves for prayer

  • Despacho offerings

  • Personal ritual tools

  • Sacred objects aligned to lineage work

The act of wrapping and carrying sacred items within woven alpaca cloth reflects Andean principles of Ayni (sacred reciprocity) — holding what is sacred with respect and intention.

In this way, the bag becomes more than functional — it becomes a portable sacred space.

Cultural Context – Chinchero Weaving Tradition

Chinchero, located above Cusco in the Sacred Valley of Peru, is renowned for its living weaving traditions.

Textiles from this region:

  • Preserve ancient Inka techniques

  • Reflect village and family lineage

  • Incorporate natural dyes and alpaca fibres

  • Carry symbolic motifs unique to their area

Weaving is not merely craft — it is ancestral knowledge expressed through thread.

The surrounding Andes, including sacred mountains such as Ausangate and Salkantay, deeply influence this symbolic language.

Craft & Authenticity

This bag is:

  • Handwoven on traditional looms

  • Made with high-quality alpaca yarn

  • Naturally dyed

  • Rooted in ancestral Andean weaving practices

Each piece is unique in subtle variation and pattern rhythm.
