Traditional Iron • No Enamel Coating • Authentic Brewing

Why Choose an Uncoated Tetsubin?

Tea enthusiasts value uncoated iron teapots because:

  • Iron slowly releases trace minerals during heating
  • Water becomes softer and smoother in taste
  • Tea develops a deeper, fuller flavour
  • The pot forms a protective tannin layer over time

The natural interaction between tea tannins and iron creates an internal film that helps prevent rust and preserves the kettle.

Before First Use (Seasoning Instructions)

Proper preparation is essential.

  1. Place a small cup of green tea leaves inside the pot.
  2. Fill 2/3 with water.
  3. Boil for 20 minutes.
  4. Turn off heat and let sit 5–6 minutes.
  5. Pour out the dark water.

Repeat by boiling clean water 6–8 times until the water runs clear.

This process forms a protective tannin layer inside the kettle, helping prevent rust.

What to Expect During Use

  • Within 5 days: small red or rust-like spots may appear inside.
  • Within 10 days: white scale may form.
  • Over time: the interior turns reddish.

This is normal and part of the natural seasoning process.

If water does not appear cloudy, do not scrub or remove this layer — it protects the kettle.

After Each Use

  • Empty immediately after use.
  • Allow to cool fully.
  • Air dry uncovered.
  • Only place lid back once fully dry.
  • Never leave standing water inside.
  • Wipe lid dry to prevent condensation forming inside.

Important Precautions

  1. Do not touch or scrub the interior.
  2. Do not use detergent.
  3. Do not wash a hot pot with cold water.
  4. Do not heat without water (dry heating can crack iron).
  5. Do not drop — cast iron can fracture.
  6. Fill only to 2/3 capacity to prevent overflow.
  7. Not suitable for microwave use.

If storing long term, lightly coat inside and outside with food-grade oil and store in a cool, dry place.

The Experience of Traditional Iron Brewing

Tetsubin teapots are more than vessels — they are part of tea ceremony tradition. Their weight, gradual heating, and evolving patina create a mindful brewing ritual.

As iron slowly warms and interacts with water, it enhances:

  • Depth of flavour
  • Mineral balance
  • The calming process of tea preparation

Each pot develops its own character with time — becoming uniquely yours.
