Four Quarter Tawantinsuyu Unkuña Wachala • Mesa Inner Cloth • Four Inca Realms

This Four Quarter Tawantinsuyu Alpaca Inner Cloth (QDP-FQ2) — also known as a Tawantinsuyu Unkuña or Wachala — is a sacred Andean inner textile representing the four quarters of the Inca world.

“Tawantinsuyu” translates to “The Four Regions Together” — the name of the Inca Empire, symbolising unity, balance and harmony across the four directions and realms of existence.

Traditionally crafted by the Q'ero medicine people — descendants of the Inca and keepers of ancient Andean wisdom — this handwoven alpaca cloth is used within mesa medicine bundles for ceremony, soul retrieval and energetic restoration.

Placed inside a larger outer mesa cloth (Mestana), the inner cloth represents the inner world of the practitioner — personal intention, hidden consciousness and spiritual transformation — while the outer cloth represents the outer world.

Tawantinsuyu – The Four Quarters

The design reflects the four regions of the Inca Empire:

  • Chinchaysuyu (North)
  • Antisuyu (East)
  • Collasuyu (South)
  • Cuntisuyu (West)

Together, they form a unified sacred whole — mirroring balance between:

  • Inner and outer worlds
  • Spiritual and physical realms
  • Individual and community
  • Earth (Pachamama) and Sun (Inti)

The four chambers are often associated with soul retrieval, divination work and energetic organisation, representing the gathering and reintegration of fragmented aspects of the self.

Bright woven bands along two edges provide directional orientation during ceremony.

What Is a Tawantinsuyu Unkuña?

An Unkuña (Wachala) is a sacred inner cloth used in Andean shamanic practice.

It serves to:

  • Wrap and protect sacred objects and stones (kuyas)
  • Organise medicine within symbolic quarters
  • Hold prayers and intentions
  • Support soul retrieval work
  • Function as a divination or sacred geometry cloth
  • Sit within a larger mesa cloth

In Andean symbolism, the mesa as a whole represents the outer garment of the practitioner, while the inner cloth protects the most sacred and personal spiritual tools — like inner clothing shielding the heart.

Uses in Practice

This Four Quarter Tawantinsuyu Cloth is especially suited for:

  • Soul retrieval ceremonies
  • Divination practices
  • Energetic organisation of medicine tools
  • Chakra and client work
  • Creating a sacred altar space
  • Inner mesa work

It may also be used as a standalone altar cloth, amplifying the energy of sacred items placed upon it.

Hierarchy of Cloth Types

  • Unkuña / Wachala: Inner cloth (this item)
