Balsam of Peru is a thick, dark, resinous liquid with a rich, sweet-balsamic fragrance that is both soothing and deeply sensuous. Although traditionally known as Peru Balsam, this sacred resin derives from a Central American tree of the pea family, and does not in fact originate from Peru. Indigenous cultures have long valued it for both medicinal and magical purposes, recognising its comforting, grounding and evocative nature.
When burned, Peru Balsam releases a unique aroma—earthy, sweet and warmly enveloping—with a subtle aphrodisiac quality. It produces abundant, dense smoke, traditionally regarded as an effective medium through which spiritual forces may manifest and communicate. This makes it especially suitable for ritual work involving visualisation, dream exploration and spirit contact.
