Star Child Copal Gum Resin Incense

Purification • Protection • Sacred Offering

Copal is one of the most ancient and revered incense resins of the Americas, used for centuries in sacred ceremony, healing rites and offerings to the Gods. This Copal Gum Resin originates from South and Central America and is derived from various species of Bursera trees, botanically related to Frankincense and Myrrh.

While it is not the rare white, sticky true Copal obtained from Protium copal—the most sacred incense of the Maya—commercial Copal has long served as a powerful ritual substitute. Both forms are honoured as sacred gums, burned to cleanse, protect and open pathways between the human and spiritual realms.

About Copal Resin

True Copal was—and remains—the most important incense of the Maya, while the Aztecs and Incas also burned Copal as their primary offering to the Gods. Due to the rarity of true Copal trees and their low resin yield, modern ceremonial practice often employs Bursera-derived Copal, which retains strong spiritual potency.

Copal releases a bright, uplifting smoke with a clean, resinous aroma that is both clarifying and protective. Its smoke has traditionally been used to carry prayers, cleanse sacred space and shield against harmful influences.

Sacred & Magical Associations

Copal is traditionally associated with:

  • Ritual purification and cleansing
  • Protection against the evil eye
  • Banishing harmful or stagnant energies
  • Healing and restoration
  • Love and heart-centred work
  • Divination and spirit communication

In Mesoamerican traditions, Copal smoke was believed to nourish the Gods themselves—an offering of life-force transformed by fire.

Sacred Herbs, Gums & Resins – Star Child

Since humanity first gathered to honour Gods, ancestors and spirits of nature, fragrant gums and resins have been burned to bridge the visible and unseen worlds. Every culture has its sacred plants, yet rare resins like Copal were traded widely due to their spiritual value.

How to Burn Gum Resin Incense

  1. Place a self-igniting charcoal disc on a fireproof surface or incense burner
  2. Light the edge of the charcoal disc and allow it to spark and crackle
  3. Once the disc is fully glowing and covered with grey ash, add a small pinch of Copal resin
  4. As the resin heats, it will release fragrant smoke
  5. Clear ash and refresh incense as desired

Use tongs or an incense spoon when handling resin or charcoal.
